Update From The Health Department

Veterinarians with a dog - Animal clinics in Pueblo, CO
The Communicable Disease (CD) Program at El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH) evaluates potential exposure of humans and pets to rabid animals. In april, EPCH has investigated reports of 6 rabid skunks, all with pets and/or human exposure. rabies in wild animals, mainly skunks and foxes, has occurred in mostly rural areas of El Paso County, however, there continues to be sporadic reports of rabid wild animals in more densely populated areas on the eastern side of the County.

There have already been 5 positive skunk rabies cases on the east side in the first few weeks of April, with possibly several more pending. It would appear that the incidence of skunk rabies has not decreased and is starting up very early in the season. The most recent cases were in the eastern part of the county with the most close-in cases near Powers and Meridian. There have not been any human exposures but there have been pet exposures and several pets have had to be euthanized.
EPCPH has encountered myths about rabies that we have heard from some veterinarians, for which we are providing accurate information. Please contact EPCPH CD Program if you have any questions regarding rabies exposure; the number is 719-578-3220.
